halfman of the week-Colt McCoy

30 11 2009

Colt McCoy ran away with the vote to earn this week’s halfman award.  On Thanksgiving night, McCoy led his Texas Longhorns team into Texas A&M and came away with a victory.  McCoy threw for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns, and rushed for another touchdown and 175 yards rushing.  With a performance like that, McCoy not only gets our halfman of the week award, but might be moving up the list for the Heisman as well.

halfdog of the week-Matthew Stafford

30 11 2009

Matthew Stafford won a close weekend of voting to claim this week’s halfdog award. On Thanksgiving, while the Lions played their annual Thanksgiving day game, Stafford threw four interceptions and had a quarterback rating of 30.5 in their loss to Green Bay.  Even though Detroit has won two more games than last year, Stafford is still having his rookie mistakes and those shined on turkey day to give Stafford our halfdog award of the week! Congrats!

Tigergate

30 11 2009

Tigergate, everywhere you look somebody has a different story of how Tiger was cheating or drunk, or who knows what, but he says that’s not the case at all, and he doesn’t have to tell the public his private matters.  Tiger come on, if you aren’t cheating and you weren’t under the influence, what were you doing?  You say you need some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be, but just answer this question,  How do you hit a fire hydrant and a tree pulling out of the driveway?  It’s a fair question, you’re an icon and when you get in a car crash at 2 in the morning people are going to want to know what happened.  So, go ahead just tell us, release a statement on your site that says, you were headed to the grocery store to pick up a late night snack.

Nobody really knows what happened to Tiger, except that he hit a tree in his driveway, his wife smashed out the back window of the Escalade with a golf club, and he got some minor cuts and scrapes on his face.  Some people are saying Elin and Tiger were fighting because he’s cheating on her with Rachel Uchitel, but how legitimate is the National Enquirer?  The first thing that came to my mind when the crash happened was that he was driving drunk, but they have said alcohol was not at play, but then who are “they” and who’s to say “they” wouldn’t cover something up for Tiger?

So far in this news, I have heard what didn’t happen, but nobody is saying what did happen, leaving it up to everyone’s imagination.  There are theories out there that he was in a fight with his wife and tried to leave the house, and she started bashing the back window of the Escalade making him swurve into a tree,  which cause Tiger to get upset saying those type of malicious rumors are irresponsible.  At least that is the theory that my grandma likes.

You know what’s irresponsible?  Crashing into a tree at 2 in the morning and then not telling anybody how it happened or why your wife didn’t just open the door to get you out, but instead had to smash out the back window with a golf club.  Tiger if you don’t have anything to hide, tell us what really happened.  Tell us that you did not have sexual relations with that woman.  Tell us you love your wife and family and had to go get diapers at the store, but until then the theories are only going to grow and the rumors are only going to be more malicious.  Tiger the truth shall set you free my friend, that is if the truth isn’t one of those nasty rumors.

But Max Hall, it’s Chuck E. Cheese!!

30 11 2009

Most sports fans across the country know about the rivalry between the Utah Utes and BYU Cougars, while the people who live in Utah know it for what it’s really like.  The BYU, Utah game splits families, marriages, and friendships.  My entire family for example bleeds pure Utah crimson, but who did I want to win? BYU.  My late grandfather might disown me as family if he knew about my intentions Saturday night.  Even with all of us here at HMHD currently attending Utah State, we can’t help but pick sides and bicker about the game.  The Utah, BYU rivalry is, and always will be full of dislike, for a nicer term.

The game Saturday night was very ugly.  The two Mountain West Conference teams combined for 173 yards of penalties, 113 of which belonged to Utah.  The two starting quarterbacks Max Hall (BYU) and Jordan Wynn (Utah) combined to throw for 45%, connecting on only 33 of 73 passes.  The game looked out of reach once Hall threw a touchdown pass to Manase Tonga to push the Cougar lead to 20-6 in the third quarter, but Utah rallied with two Joe Phillips field goals and a Eddie Wide touchdown run.  The second of the Phillips field goals in the fourth quarter forced the game into overtime where Phillips also got the Utes on the board first with yet another field goal.  However on the following Cougar possession Max Hall connected with Andrew George for a 25 yard game winning touchdown.  In 11 of the past 13 meetings, this game has been decided by a touchdown or less.

The most interesting part of this game was definitely the comments made by Max Hall after the game.  Hall, who has come out and apologized since, stated “I don’t like Utah. In fact, I hate them. I hate everything about them. I hate their program, their fans. I hate everything,” Hall later added “I think the whole university and their fans and the organization is classless,” Hall continued. “They threw beer on my family and stuff last year and did a whole bunch of nasty things. I don’t respect them and they deserved to lose.”  Last year, Hall threw five interceptions against Utah, and really had no room to talk.  This year, he is a senior and doesn’t need to worry about playing Utah again, makes sense to bash on your way out.

This got me thinking about some of the notable alumni that Hall would be including in this bash.  BYU is well known for their affiliation with the LDS Church, and four former presidents of the LDS Church attended Utah, plus the current president Thomas S. Monson also attended Utah.  Current BYU president Cecil O. Samuelson attended Utah and so did the founder of the gaming system Atari and Chuck E. Cheese, Nolan Bushnell. Other accomplishments from Utah grads include the inventor of the artificial heart and the concept of the laptop computer.  Products created from Utah grads include Pixar, Adobe, Wordperfect, and JetBlue.  I don’t know Max Hall, you don’t like any part of the U? Utah has come up with some pretty good things, you need to stop focusing on Ted Bundy, he only went to Utah Law School briefly before he was arrested, you can’t bash the entire school because of him.

What I’m Thankful for in Sports

27 11 2009

With yesterday being Thanksgiving, we here at HMHD wanted to spend today writing about what we are truly thankful for in sports.  Matt is thankful for college basketball and I also love March Madness.  The thing that I’m most grateful in sports is something that makes March Madness so great and that’s the underdog.

There is nothing better in sports than watching an underdog somehow pull out a victory against an opponent that is viewed as far superior.  There have been so many instances in sports where the underdog has come out on top and everyone loves it.  In sports just becuase you are bigger, faster stronger; it doesn’t mean you’re going to come out on top.

Think back to recent memory, every year there are major upsets in the NCAA tournament and that’s what makes it great.  One of my favorite upsets in recent memory belongs to a team that I hate, the New York Giants.  When David Tyree lept up and made that catch against the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl I lept out off my couch and yelled along with everyone else in the room and when they came out on top in the end I was left speechless.  That’s what upsets do, they create excitement.

It’s fun when two teams that are evenly matched play one another and after a hard fought battle someone wins, but it’s an instant classic game when David fights to the finish against Goliath and wins.  If your team happens to be that Cinderella then those feelings are only multiplied, I can’t even imagine being a fan of the New York Giants when they won the Super Bowl or how about being a student or alumni during the 1985 Villanova championship run when they took down a supposedly unbeatable Georgetown team.

Sports are great and they only get better when the unthinkable happens.  So this Thanksgiving I just wanted to show my gratitude toward every David who goes toe-to-toe with a Goliath in sports.

What I’m Thankful for in Sports

27 11 2009

With yesterday being Thanksgiving, we here at HMHD wanted to spend today writing about what we are truly thankful for in sports.  The one thing that I am most thankful for in the sports world is college basketball.

College basketball to me in one of the greatest seasons of sports.  In what other sport can a weaker opponent really have a good chance to pull an upset?  Sure Appalachian State beat Michigan but that was a once in a decade type game.  In College basketball it can happen any weekend, like Portland just smacking UCLA last night 74-47.  Once preseason ends, then conference games start, and every game is crucial, every game matters.  Conference tournaments then get under way and for most schools, they have to win out for a chance to make it to the NCAA Tournament.  Some teams make an improbable run and make it, most don’t.  Then the NCAA Tournament is the best month of sports in my opinion.  Making picks, picking the 12-5 seed upset, and getting shocked a few games along the ride to crowning a college basketball champion.

College basketball truly brings out school spirit and offers intense, stand two feet away from your tv suspense, and I want to thank college basketball for giving this to us year in, and year out.
