Utah Flash Hoax not so Good

8 12 2009

It all started back in 1998 when Bryon Russell claimed that he could guard Michael Jordan.  Jordan then hit the game winning shot over Russell in game 6 of the NBA Finals, to give the Chicago Bulls the title.  Bryon Russell has not let it go yet.

After Jordan made remarks about Russell in his Hall Of Fame speech, Russell issued a challenge to Jordan to play a game of 1-on-1. The Utah Flash’s team owner, Brandt Andersen got behind the idea and offered $100,000 to the winners charity.  Andersen or Russell never heard back from Jordan.

Andersen came up with a plan to plant a hoax Michael Jordan, with bodyguards in Provo, UT to see what kind of hype it could create, planning to have the game at halftime of the D-League’s Utah Flash home opener.  A franchise record crowd of over seven thousand on Monday night, showed up thinking that Michael Jordan was going to be present, they were disappointed.  At halftime, Russell stood at center court, and proudly proclaimed “I’m ready to play. Where is MJ?”.  The hoax Jordan and bodyguards came out of the tunnel and the crowd quickly roared with acceptance.  The fake Jordan walked up to Russell who quickly said This is embarrassing right now, this is not good.” And the fans knew it by turning their cheers into jeers, and started leaving the game.

Andersen has lost most of his credibilty after this little stunt.  When explaining the situation, Andersen said that he never promised that Jordan would be there, and claims that up until Monday,  “We did think there was a chance he might be here.”  Come on Andersen, Really? You think Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player ever, would come to Provo to play Bryon Russell in a game of 21 at a D-League halftime? I think he has better things to do.  I wouldn’t be surprised if most of those fans don’t return in the future, even though Andersen offered free tickets to an upcoming game. As for Bryon Russell, let it go dude, Michael Jordan clowned you like he did everyone else in the league, you aren’t good enough to even get a call back from “His Airness”.
